What to expect at your first Brazilian waxing appointment
Now understand, the following scenario is what normally happens at Waxy Kathy. Every Technician has their own procedures and preferences, so you will probably see differences if you go to someone else. The standard Brazilian wax takes about 20 – 30 minutes, but I like to take extra time with new clients. Be sure to read the All About Waxing page for pre-appointment tips.
As you enter the waxing room you will see the table draped in a white cotton sheet, a paper sheet and a folded towel. A bolster will be at one end of the table; this is for you to recline against. You will be given a few minutes of privacy to get ready.
When doing a Brazilian wax it is best for both of us if you remove your underwear. That way it’s not in the way and I don’t have to worry about getting wax on your clothing. Once you remove your panties, you will sit on the table, on top of the paper sheet and you will cover yourself with the available towel. Don’t worry there is no scooting to the edge of the table and if you ask me about stirrups I’ll probably think you’re talking about horse back riding.
Once I enter the room I will start chatting away. I can’t help it… I’m a talker! We will start by cleansing and preparing the area. I will ask you EXACTLY what you want waxed. Some people want everything gone, some want to leave a strip or triangle. All these have different names in the industry… but I prefer to just ask you what you would like.
Before we go any further, I would like to say something about trimming. The perfect hair length for waxing is ¼ to ½ inch. If the hair is longer, that does not necessarily mean we need to trim it. I advise all my ladies NOT to trim at home before their appointment. If the hair needs to be trimmed I would prefer to do it myself. Often times home trimming can result in the hair now being too short for waxing. We don’t want that to happen!
Once we’ve figured out exactly what we’re going to do, we start to wax. I always start at the top outside edges and work my way in and down. Again, I use hard wax for the sensitive areas. We spread on the wax and we let it dry. As it dries, it turns hard, encapsulating the hair. It also lifts from the skin so it doesn’t leave your skin sticky, therefore causing less skin irritation. Once the wax sets up, we flip up the edge and remove the wax and hair together. There are several techniques I can use to help alleviate the discomfort, such as holding the skin tight and using pressure. And not to worry, you are basically kept covered with the towel except for wax application and removal, which is very brief. There are, of course, times I will instruct you to pop a leg out to the side or to lift your leg up to your chest. And if you want the FULL Brazilian, I will have you turn over and lay on you stomach to get to the “tail feathers”. No you don’t have to get on your hands and knees, eek!
Before you get dressed I will have you take a look and see if you notice any stray guys (hairs), because those stinkers like to hide from me! Don’t be shy, I want you to find the strays. There’s nothing worse than getting all the way home, hopping in the shower and finding strays! I know, I’ve been there!!
Now that we’re both happy I’ll give you a few moments alone to get dressed. And guess what? YOU DID IT!! Piece of cake… it’s not so bad! I really don’t understand why everybody has to be so dramatic.
